Sunday

I bet somebody will tell me what kind of frog this is.
(northern leopard frog)
First fall colors
Snowy egret. (And no, I don't have the right lens for this shot.)
Correction: great egret.

Thanks, Gina. I knew either you or TimInMich would know about the frog. Most of the frogs at the nature center were shy. I managed to creep up on this guy.

Thanks, Buffy. The photographer who took the picture on your link managed to get his frog on a less cluttered background.

I'm afraid I'm not much good with frogs (I mean identifying them), so thanks and a shout out to Gina and Buffy. I'm more of a birder and so, ahem, I believe you have a great egret there, rather than a snowy. That's a yellow bill, isn't it? And, as Crossley says, "the kinked neck droops a long way below the body." A snowy's neck looks sort of continuous with the body. Also, the great egret is the most likely egret in this area.
BTW, when my brother Mike and sister Jean were here in late July, we went to the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge near Saginaw, our old stomping grounds. We hadn't been there in years, and we thought the relatively new driving tour would be lame. Were we wrong! It was stupendous! We saw easily over 100 great egrets, no way to count them all. Scads of deer with their fawns, lots of waterfowl, and many great birds. And this at a time of year and time of day that is normally very slow birding. If we hadn't had to get to a reunion, Mike and I might have stayed long past the patience of the others. I highly recommend the place, especially the driving tour. Bear in mind, it's one way, once you're in, you gotta keep going. And don't drive too near the edge of the dikes, it's a long way down!. Of course, there's no guarantee you'll have the same experience, and it's closed for much of hunting season. Also high water, etc. so you'd want to check if the trails are open before going.

TimInMichI stand corrected. Great egret it is. Thanks for the tip about Shiawasse National Wildlife Refuge. I'll have to visit.
