What plant is that in the top photo? It reminds me of the star anise I was working with this weekend.

As for the seed pod, I have no idea. It was a weed growing by the side of the road. Right now, I'm in Italy, and the Midwestern flora book is in Michigan. I can try to look it up when I get home. I'll also ask my friend, TimInMich who Knows These Things.
